Government Forecasts 2023 Fishing Season to Reach 37B Meticals

The volume of fish production in the country is expected to reach 468,000 tonnes this year, with an overall revenue of about 37 billion meticais, according to forecasts from the Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.

Speaking on Monday, March 13, in the Katembe municipal district, in Maputo, during the opening ceremony of the 2023 fishing season, the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, was confident about the fishing production forecast for this year, stating that the volumes may rise to last year’s.

“Our expectations for the current fishing season are encouraging in terms of increased production. The estimates point to an overall production of 468,000 tons, valued at 37 billion meticais”, put the minister in perspective.

According to the minister, it is foreseen that 78 industrial vessels, 406 semi-industrial vessels and 37,649 artisanal fishing gears will be licensed, having also revealed that, of the total production, artisanal fishing will contribute with more than 90%, being, in this way, one of the main pillars that ensure the contribution in the national economy.

“At the moment we have the great challenge of ensuring the quality, efficiency and reliability in the systems of statistical information registration of production. On the other hand, we must continue on the path of making artisanal fishermen aware of the need to license their activities and to register in the social security and insurance system for their fishing units,” concluded Lídia Cardoso.
