The Director of District Services for Economic Activities in Mandlakazi, Gaza province, has been detained along with an agricultural extension officer and a government driver, over their alleged involvement in a scheme to divert agricultural inputs intended for local communities.
According to information reported by the newspaper O País, the three civil servants have been held since 28 August while the case continues to be investigated by judicial authorities.
The driver was arrested in the district of Chókwè while transporting fertilisers in an official government vehicle belonging to the Mandlakazi district administration. The products were part of a consignment destined for distribution to communities and were being transported along the Mandlakazi–Guijá–Chókwè route.
The quantities of fertilisers and other products allegedly diverted have not yet been disclosed, nor has the destination of the goods been confirmed.
According to the same source, investigations have been under way for approximately three months and may result in the identification and arrest of additional individuals implicated in the scheme.
Authorities are now working to establish the full scale of the alleged diversion, the circumstances under which the inputs left the distribution chain, and the possible involvement of other officials or private parties.
Gaza’s agricultural sector continues to grapple with the aftermath of flooding that affected several production zones. In June, Diário Económico reported that the inundations caused an estimated US$360,000 in damage to the Baixo Limpopo irrigation system and destroyed more than eight thousand hectares of crops, including rice.
The recovery of agricultural production has prompted the mobilisation of new support for farmers. In August, the government announced its intention to raise approximately US$2 billion for agricultural investment over the next four years, covering improved seeds, fertilisers, agrarian extension services, mechanisation, and irrigation.
A separate programme, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) with funding from Sweden, is set to support approximately 9,000 smallholder farming families in Gaza affected by droughts and floods.
