Gaza: Customs Authorities Step Up Bird Flu Surveillance

In Gaza province, the customs authorities are stepping up inspections at the main border posts to prevent the import of poultry products during this ban period.

The action mainly covers the border posts of Giriundo, in the district of Massingir, and Pafúri, in Chicualacuala, gateways into the province from neighboring South Africa, a country severely affected by avian flu.

The information was provided by the head of the Livestock Department at the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries in Gaza, Sérgio Maneno, who stressed that the measure is aimed at preventing the entry of the bird flu virus and protecting poultry production.

This Sunday, the National Health Institute (INS) also advocated strengthening phytosanitary measures to contain bird flu, which has already been detected in the district of Morrumbene, Inhambane province, in the south of the country.

According to INS researcher Osvaldo Inlamea, quoted by Rádio Moçambique, “bird flu, if not well controlled, could spread and cause a crisis in poultry production”.
