Gapi Adopts Decentralized Approach to Strengthen Inclusive Agribusiness in the Country

Gapi – Sociedade de Investimentos, a Mozambican development finance institution focused on financing and providing technical support to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) – is implementing a new decentralized approach under the Moz Inclusive Agribusiness program, aimed at strengthening the inclusive financial ecosystem and boosting agribusiness in the country.

The initiative emphasizes proximity to beneficiaries and tailored responses to local realities, in a context where access to financial and business services remains a structural challenge for MSMEs, particularly in rural areas.

The approach is being implemented in the Nacala Corridor and the Zambezi Valley, covering districts such as Ribáuè, Malema, Monapo, Cuamba, Gurúè, Mocuba, and Milange, among other strategic agricultural production areas.

The program focuses on the maize and soybean value chains, sectors considered priorities for food security and household income. In these sectors, MSMEs—particularly those led by young people and women—face constraints in accessing business development services, appropriate financing, and sustainable markets.

The rollout of the new approach began with a Train-the-Trainer (ToT) program for Gapi’s technical team, aimed at strengthening internal capacities for more effective field-level operations. The Train-the-Trainer initiative is designed to equip trainers to replicate knowledge, coordinate teams, supervise activities, and ensure the quality of Business Development Services (BDS) provided to beneficiary enterprises.

This capacity-building is based on the “Start and Improve Your Business” methodology and seeks to ensure a structured, coherent, and high-quality intervention aligned with the objectives of the Moz Inclusive Agribusiness program, which aims to strengthen the agribusiness-related business ecosystem in Mozambique in an inclusive and sustainable manner.
