The head of Mozambique’s Department of Almond Promotion and Production, Paulino Sitoe, revealed that cashew nut production could reach 160,000 tonnes in the 2023-24 agricultural campaign, compared to the 157,000 recorded previously.
According to the official in charge of the southern region of the country, the current scenario indicates that there is a great chance of good production and commercialisation of the nut, despite the forecast of torrential rain during the campaign.
“In the north, the rainfall will not affect production and harvesting, but producers will need to strictly observe procedures. Positive expectations also cover the centre,” he explained.
Paulino Sitoe stressed that in order to ensure production growth, preparatory activities had been carried out, such as spraying 9.2 million cashew trees, training 6,400 producers and 5,700 chemical treatment service providers.
The Annual Balance of Payments Bulletin, published by the Bank of Mozambique, indicates that last year the country exported agricultural products worth 562.3 million dollars, 51.7 million of which came from cashew nut exports.
Vietnam and India are currently the two main buyers of cashew nuts, followed by the United States of America, the Netherlands and China.
