The Mozambique LNG Foundation announced on Thursday, March 12, a donation of 94 million meticais (€1.2 million) aimed at directly supporting approximately 5,000 farmers in the province of Cabo Delgado, according to the Lusa news agency.
According to Erika Rodrigues, the foundation’s programme coordinator, the initiative is expected to benefit thousands of agricultural producers directly and create around 85 jobs within the project.
“We expect to contribute to 5,000 farmers who will benefit directly, and to create 85 jobs through the project,” the official said in the city of Pemba during a session of the Provincial Executive Council.
She explained that the new sustainable livelihoods strengthening programme is based on three main pillars. The first focuses on increasing agricultural productivity and improving farmers’ incomes. The second aims to strengthen food security for beneficiary families.
“The third pillar, one of the most fundamental, is market linkage and value addition,” added Erika Rodrigues.
With an expected duration of three years, the project will cover the districts of Chiúre, Namuno and Balama. The initiative also includes direct support to about 200 lead farmers and the training of approximately 1,000 women in agricultural processing, particularly in the treatment and value addition of cashew nuts.
For his part, the governor of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, welcomed the initiative, noting that the project could generate positive impacts in the districts involved. “We approve the initiative so that it can continue preparing to directly impact the districts listed,” he said.
The Mozambique LNG Foundation was created in 2023 by the consortium behind the Mozambique LNG project, a natural gas megaproject led by TotalEnergies, with the aim of supporting long-term development priorities in Cabo Delgado by promoting socioeconomic development and sustainability in local communities.
