On Friday 5 July, the Mozambican Association for the Promotion of Modern Cooperatives (AMPCM) advocated the creation of more modern agricultural cooperatives as a way of galvanising the country’s economic development, Radio Moçambique reported .
According to the agency’s explanation, the executive director of AMPCM, Júlia Fernandes, called on small and medium-sized producers to join cooperative movements, with a view to maximising gains and fighting poverty.
The executive director of AMPCM pointed out the advantages and benefits that cooperatives offer producers, emphasising the ease with which they can obtain financing, while also mentioning that cooperative movements still lack legal provisions to regulate their activity.
Júlia Fernandes pointed out that, to date, the country has more than 10,000 cooperatives and pre-cooperatives, corresponding to more than 1,500 members.
