Agricultural Credit Recovers to $94.1 Million but Remains Below 2024 Levels

The volume of bank credit granted to the agricultural sector in Mozambique recorded a slight recovery in October 2025, reaching 94.1 million dollars. This represents an improvement compared to previous months of the same year but remains below the amount recorded in the same period of 2024.

According to the Monthly Statistical Information Summary from the Bank of Mozambique, in October of last year, financing for the agricultural sector stood at 72.9 million dollars.

The value had fallen to 63.9 million dollars in February 2025, the lowest point of the year, before starting a gradual recovery.

Despite this upward trajectory, agricultural credit represents only about 2% of the total credit granted by banks to the Mozambican economy, highlighting the limited weight of the primary sector in the formal financial system.

The recent recovery may be related to preparations for the 2025–26 agricultural campaign, a period during which demand for funds to acquire inputs and logistical services increases.

However, growth remains limited by structural challenges, such as high perceived risk and the weak collateral capacity of producers.

In contrast, the sectors that absorbed the most bank credit in October were individuals, with 1.6 million dollars, followed by transport and communications, with 400.3 million dollars, and commerce, with 365.1 million dollars.
