Mozambique and China signed an agreement this Tuesday (3) that allows the export of new Mozambican agricultural products without customs duties.
According to the newspaper Noticias, the agreement was signed in Beijing during Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi’s visit to China. This new understanding allows Mozambique to add three new products to the list of 400 items already exempt from duties for export to the Chinese market.
The new products covered by the agreement are macadamia nuts, pigeon peas and cashew nuts, which can be exported to China without the application of tariffs, reinforcing the opportunities for Mozambican agricultural producers.
The agreement, valid for three years and automatically renewed, was initialled by Mozambique’s ambassador to China, Maria Gustavo, and the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, Wang Hejun.
The measure is part of efforts to increase trade co-operation between the two countries and stimulate economic growth by expanding access for Mozambican products to the Chinese market.
The inclusion of new agricultural products aims to strengthen the national agricultural sector and promote the diversification of Mozambique’s exports.
During the Mozambique-China Economic Forum, the President emphasised Mozambican’s geostrategic position as an important platform for regional and international trade.
Filipe Nyusi said that development needs in infrastructure, agriculture and tourism represent significant investment opportunities for Chinese companies, emphasising the importance of Mozambique’s ports and railways in accessing the Indian Ocean.
